Boju Boju – Africa’s First Virtual Reality
Bedtime stories, African stories, Children, Books
The sun was setting over the compound, painting the sky in pink and orange swirls. Smart Sindara, her twin brothers Timi and Tami, their mum and dad, and their best friend Amina were buzzing with excitement. Today, they were about to play the ultimate championship of Boju Boju—the game that had entertained African children for generations.

Buchi, the ever-serious referee, stood in the middle of the yard, holding a whistle.
“Alright everyone,” he announced. “The teams are set. Team One: Dad and Mum. Team Two: Timi and Tami. Team Three: Smart Sindara and Amina. I’ll keep score. No cheating!”
The Magic of Boju Boju
Sindara tied a scarf around her eyes, giggling. “Boju boju, boju boju… who’s in the garden?” she sang.
Her mum replied in a deep, playful voice, “It’s meee!”
“Do you have any children?” Sindara asked.
“Yes, two of them,” Mum said, crouching to change her voice again.
In that moment, Sindara wasn’t in her own yard anymore. She was in a lush, enchanted garden with tall magical trees, whispering winds, and glowing fireflies. She could “see” it all, even though her eyes were covered. That was the magic of Boju Boju—your imagination became the headset, your mind painted the world.

Africa’s VR Before VR
Years later, people would talk about Virtual Reality—big goggles you put on to step into a digital world. VR shows you a new world. Boju Boju made you create one in your mind.
VR tells your brain what to see. Boju Boju asks your brain what it wants to see.
With VR, you’re inside someone else’s imagination. With Boju Boju, you live inside your own.
The Game Heats Up
Dad, tall and quick, dodged behind the hibiscus bush as Mum tried to distract Sindara’s team by humming loudly. Timi and Tami crawled under the table to hide.
Sindara’s hands waved through the air, feeling for clues. Amina whispered, “I hear Timi breathing!” and they both pounced, pulling off the scarf to reveal their catch.
“Team Three scores!” Buchi shouted.
The laughter was loud, the air thick with playful competition. There were no screens, no wires—just voices, movement, and the theatre of the mind.

The Final Round
For the last round, Sindara was “it.” She closed her eyes tight and imagined herself as a futuristic Boju Boju champion—wearing sleek African-patterned VR goggles that projected a glowing savannah filled with animals and friends. The real VR world in her head felt so vivid, she almost forgot she was just in her backyard.
She caught Dad. Then Mum. Then Tami. The scarf came off, and Buchi blew his whistle. “Victory to Team Three!”
They all collapsed on the grass, laughing. Sindara thought to herself:
Maybe one day, VR will let us play Boju Boju across the world… but no matter what, our African VR—the kind we carry in our minds—will always be the best.
Happy back to school for everyone resuming school next week!
