Smart Sindara loved spending weekends at Grandma’s house. The large family home was always filled with laughter, music, delicious food, and cousins running from room to room.

Smart SIndara and her Cousins.

But that weekend, Sindara was unusually quiet.

A few days earlier, she had tried to help her mother carry a tray of drinks during a family gathering. She had stumbled, and the cups had fallen to the floor. Although nobody was angry, some of her cousins had laughed.

Since then, Sindara had stopped volunteering to help.

When Grandma asked her to set the dining table, Sindara shook her head.

“I might make another mistake,” she said.

When her little cousin Zina asked Sindara to lead their evening game, she refused.

“Choose someone else.”

Grandma noticed that Sindara no longer spoke with her usual confidence.

That evening, rain began to fall heavily against the windows. The wind shook the trees, and suddenly, the lights went out.

The younger children screamed and rushed towards Sindara.

“It is only a power cut,” she said, although her own heart was beating quickly.

Grandma lit a candle and placed it in the middle of the sitting room. Our generator is out for servicing kids she exclaimed so let’s go old school!

“Since we cannot watch television,” Grandma said, “let us tell stories.”

The children gathered around her. It was beautiful.

Grandma began telling them about Queen Amina of Zazzau, the courageous queen who trained from a young age and grew into a powerful leader.

“Was Queen Amina never afraid?” Sindara asked.

“Oh, she must have felt afraid many times,” Grandma replied. “But courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to act wisely even when fear is present.”

Sindara thought about the fallen tray.

Perhaps making one mistake did not mean she had lost her courage.

Suddenly, they heard a loud sound from the kitchen.

Bang!

The younger children grabbed Sindara’s arms.

“What was that?” Zina whispered.

Grandma was helping Sindara’s mother calm the baby, so Sindara slowly picked up the candle. .

“I will check,” she said.

Her knees felt weak, but she remembered Queen Amina.

One brave step at a time.

Sindara walked towards the kitchen with Brave Buchi and the twins following closely behind her.

When they entered, they discovered that the wind had pushed an open window against a metal bowl. The bowl had fallen to the floor.

“There is nothing to fear,” Sindara announced. “We only need to close the window.”

She carefully placed candle on the table, shut the window, and picked up the bowl.

When they returned to the sitting room, everyone clapped.

“Our Queen Amina!” Brave Buchi cheered.

Sindara laughed.

Later, Grandma asked Sindara to help serve warm puff-puff to the family. For a moment, Sindara hesitated.

Then she lifted the tray with both hands and walked slowly.

This time, she did not drop anything.

But Sindara understood that even if she had, it would not have meant she was weak.

That night, she told Grandma, “I thought my courage disappeared when I made a mistake.”

Grandma smiled. “Your courage never left. It was waiting for you to use it again.”

Sindara looked around at her family and smiled.

Like Queen Amina of Zazzau, she would not allow fear to lead her.

She would take one brave step at a time.
