Smart Sindara and the Tree of Choices

One bright Saturday morning, Smart Sindara walked into her grandmother’s backyard, her yellow sunflower glowing in her afro under the warm sun. She had a big decision to make—and it was making her feel stuck.

Her school was hosting two exciting events on the same day.

A science fair… and a dance showcase.

Sindara loved both. She couldn’t choose.

She sighed and flopped onto a wooden bench.

“Hmm… when your mind feels tangled,” Grandma said, walking over with a smile, “it’s time to visit the Tree of Choices.”

“The Tree of what?” Sindara asked, sitting up.

Grandma pointed to the large mango tree in the yard. Its branches stretched wide in every direction.

“Every decision,” Grandma said, “is like this tree. You start at the trunk—and each branch shows you a different path.”

Sindara walked closer, curious.

“Let’s try it,” Grandma said. “Your trunk is your decision: What should Sindara choose?

Sindara nodded.

“Now,” Grandma continued, “what are your two main branches?”

“The science fair… and the dance showcase,” Sindara replied.

“Good. Now climb each branch—with your mind,” Grandma said.

Sindara closed her eyes.

“First branch,” she said slowly. “If I choose the science fair… I get to present my solar system project. I might win a prize. I’ll learn more science.”

She smiled.

“But…” she added, “I’ll miss dancing with my friends.”

Grandma nodded. “That’s one branch. Now the other.”

Sindara took a deep breath.

“If I choose the dance showcase… I’ll perform on stage. It will be fun. My friends will be there.”

She paused.

“But I’ll miss the science fair… and all the work I put into my project.”

Grandma picked up a stick and gently drew a small tree in the sand.

“Now look,” she said, adding little twigs to each branch. “Each branch has more branches—these are the results of your choice.”

Sindara’s eyes widened. “So every choice grows more choices?”

“Exactly,” Grandma said. “That’s why it’s called a decision tree.”

Sindara thought carefully.

“Which branch helps me grow the most?” she whispered.

She imagined herself at the science fair—explaining her project confidently, learning, discovering.

Then she imagined dancing—happy, free, full of joy.

She opened her eyes.

“I think…” she said slowly, “the science fair helps my future dream of becoming an inventor.”

Grandma smiled. “And what can you do about the dancing?”

Sindara grinned. “I can still dance with my friends after! Or perform another time.”

Grandma clapped softly. “That’s the power of thinking through your tree.”

Sindara stood tall, decision made.

“I choose the science fair!” she said proudly.

As she walked away, she looked back at the mango tree.

It wasn’t just a tree anymore.

It was a reminder.

Every decision starts at the trunk.

Every choice creates branches.

And with a little thinking, you can always find your best path.
