Smart Sindara Learns the 11 Times Table Hack

Smart Sindara was great at math — or at least, most of the time. She could race through addition, subtraction, and even her 5 and 10 times tables. But one day in class, Miss Okoro wrote a new challenge on the board:

11 × 7 = ?
11 × 12 = ?

Sindara scratched her head. “I know 11 × 1 is 11 and 11 × 2 is 22… but after that, it gets confusing!”

Her friend Amira chuckled. “You’re going to love this one, Sindara. The 11 times table has the coolest trick ever!”

The Mirror Number Magic

Amira leaned closer and whispered, “For numbers less than 10, multiplying by 11 is the easiest thing ever. You just double the number by writing it twice.”

Sindara looked puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Watch this,” Amira said. “11 × 3 is just 3 and 3 side by side — 33. 11 × 4? That’s 44. 11 × 7? 77.”

Sindara’s jaw dropped. “Wait… that’s it? I don’t even need to multiply?”

“Exactly!” Amira grinned. “It’s like the numbers are reflecting themselves in a mirror.”

Sindara quickly tried a few on her own:

  • 11 × 5 = 55

  • 11 × 6 = 66

  • 11 × 8 = 88

“This is amazing!” she laughed. “I can do these in my sleep.”

The Secret Middle Number Trick

“Okay,” Miss Okoro said, joining their conversation. “That works for numbers under 10. But what if we go higher — like 11 × 12?”

Sindara’s smile faded. “Oh no. That’s harder.”

“Not really,” Miss Okoro said, writing 11 × 12 on the board. “Here’s the trick: write the first and last digits of 12 — 1 and 2 — with a space between them. Then add those two digits together and place the sum in the middle.”

Sindara followed along.

  • Write the 1 and 2 with a space: _1 2

  • Add 1 + 2 = 3

  • Place 3 in the middle: 132

“So 11 × 12 = 132!” Sindara exclaimed. “That’s brilliant!”

“Exactly,” said Miss Okoro. “Try 11 × 23.”

Sindara tried it step by step:

  • Write 2 _ 3

  • Add 2 + 3 = 5

  • Final answer: 253

“Correct,” Miss Okoro said. “Now you’re unstoppable.”

Tricky But Fun

Sindara spent the rest of math class testing the trick on bigger numbers. Some needed a little carrying over, but once she understood the pattern, it was like solving a fun puzzle.

  • 11 × 34 → 3 _ 4 → 3 + 4 = 7 → 374

  • 11 × 47 → 4 _ 7 → 4 + 7 = 11 → carry the 1 → 517

Even when carrying was needed, she felt confident. The 11 times table was no longer scary — it was exciting.

Sharing the Secret

That afternoon, Sindara turned into the class teacher herself. She drew a big “11 Times Magic” poster and showed everyone the mirror trick and the middle-number method.

Soon the classroom buzzed with energy:

“11 × 6 is 66!”
“11 × 14 is 154!”
“11 × 23 is 253!”

Everyone was having so much fun that Miss Okoro declared it “Math Hack Day.”

 A New Superpower

As she walked home, Sindara couldn’t stop smiling. She felt like she had unlocked a new math superpower.

“I used to think the 11 times table was confusing,” she told Amira, “but now I know it’s one of the easiest — if you know the trick!”

Amira bumped her shoulder playfully. “See? That’s what being smart is all about. It’s not about knowing everything — it’s about knowing the right way to figure things out.”

Sindara nodded. She couldn’t wait to see what clever math hacks she would discover next. And from that day forward, whenever she saw the number 11, she smiled — because she knew its secret.
