Smart Sindara and the Shoes of Courage- The day of the African child
Inspired by the Day of the African Child – June 16th

It was a quiet night in Lagos, and Smart Sindara couldn’t sleep.
She tossed. She turned. She flopped on her belly. Then finally, she sat up.
“Mum,” she whispered. “Can I ask you something?”
Her mum looked up from her book. “Of course, love. What’s on your mind?”
“At school today, our teacher said June 16 is the Day of the African Child. She said something about children marching and… getting hurt. But I didn’t really understand.”
Her mum closed the book slowly. She patted the space beside her.
“Sindara, let me tell you a story. A true one. About children who were just like you—smart, brave, and full of dreams.”

Day of the African child
Sindara curled up beside her mum and listened.
“A long time ago, in a place called Soweto in South Africa,” her mum began, “Black children were told they could no longer learn in their own language. They were forced to learn in Afrikaans—a language they didn’t speak at home, one that felt like chains instead of wings.”
Sindara’s eyes widened. “That’s not fair.”
“No, it wasn’t,” her mum said gently. “So on June 16, 1976, thousands of students—some your age, some older—put on their shoes, held hands, and marched. They weren’t angry. They were determined. They chanted for freedom and better schools. But instead of listening, the people in power sent police.”

“What happened?” Sindara whispered.
Her mum’s voice grew soft. “Tear gas. Bullets. Chaos. Many children were hurt. Some never made it home. But that day shook the world. People everywhere saw that African children weren’t weak—they were warriors of wisdom.”
Sindara sat quietly, heart full. “So… that’s why we have the Day of the African Child?”
“Yes,” her mum nodded. “To honor those children. And to remind us that every African child—no matter where she lives or what her background is—deserves a voice, a desk, a book, a dream.”
Sindara blinked, thinking. Then she smiled a quiet smile. “Mum?”
“Yes?”
“Can I wear my school shoes tomorrow? Not the sandals. The black shoes with the polish.”
“Of course. But why?”
Sindara stood up tall on the bed. “Because I want to march too. Not with signs, but with my mind. I want to be smart, and brave, and kind. Just like those kids.”

Her mum kissed her forehead, proud and teary-eyed. “Then wear them with purpose, my girl. Every step you take is part of their dream.”
That night, Sindara placed her polished school shoes beside her bed like a crown on a pillow.
And as she drifted to sleep, she imagined herself walking through Soweto—not scared, not angry, but strong. Her purple polka-dot dress fluttered in the breeze. Her voice rang out with truth.
Because being a child in Africa wasn’t just about growing up.
It was about rising up.
